Consciousness at the Edge of Explanation
Neuroscience keeps its promises about correlation. The hard question is whether correlation was ever the promise we cared about.
Every few years a headline announces that consciousness has been located — in a frequency band, a cortical loop, a burst of coordinated activity. The findings are usually solid, and the announcement is usually wrong, because locating the correlates of experience is not the same as explaining why there is experience at all.
This is the gap philosophers call hard, and it has proven immune to instrumentation. We can now watch a brain decide, remember, and dream in resolutions that would have seemed magical a generation ago. What we cannot do is derive, from any wiring diagram, why the processing feels like something from the inside — why there is an inside.
Some researchers conclude the question is confused, a leftover of dualist grammar that will dissolve as the science matures. Others take the opposite lesson: that our physical vocabulary is incomplete, and consciousness marks the place where the incompleteness shows. Both camps can point to the same data, which is precisely the problem.
It may be that the honest position is patience without complacency — running the experiments while admitting they interrogate the correlates, not the mystery. Edges of explanation have moved before. But whether this one moves, or turns out instead to be a boundary of a different kind, is itself among the great open questions a thoughtful century will have to sit with.
